G2A · General question group

Phone Operating

Good HF phone operation is about placing a clean signal in the right part of the band and listening well enough to fit into the way the frequency is already being used.

Practical takeaway

Good HF phone operation is about placing a clean signal in the right part of the band and listening well enough to fit into the way the frequency is already being used.

General exam focus

The explanation below teaches the ideas behind G2A while keeping the important terms recognizable. The Quiz Me button uses the current question-pool wording for this group.

1. Know the normal sideband convention

Lower sideband is normally used on the lower-frequency HF voice bands and upper sideband on the higher-frequency voice bands. The convention keeps operators predictable and makes activity easier to find.

2. Set audio for intelligibility, not loudness

Too much microphone gain or speech processing can cause distortion and splatter. A clean SSB signal comes from sensible gain, proper ALC behavior, and enough clearance from a band edge for the entire sideband.

3. Listen before joining a contact

Whether calling CQ, answering a station, or joining a roundtable, first identify the operating pattern. On a busy band, listening tells you when and where a short call will be effective.

G2A checklist

  • Recognize the usual HF sideband conventions.
  • Avoid overdriving an SSB transmitter or creating splatter.
  • Account for sideband width near a band edge.
  • Listen to the operating pattern before transmitting.
