G6A · General question group

Passive Parts, Diodes, Transistors, Tubes & Batteries

A schematic becomes easier when each component is associated with the job it usually performs: limit, store, switch, amplify, rectify, regulate, or supply energy.

General exam focus

The explanation below teaches the ideas behind G6A while keeping the important terms recognizable. The Quiz Me button uses the current question-pool wording for this group.

1. Passive components shape voltage, current, and frequency response

Resistors limit current and set bias; capacitors store electric-field energy and block DC while passing changing signals; inductors store magnetic-field energy and oppose changing current. Their ratings matter because real parts can overheat, arc, saturate, or become lossy.

2. Semiconductors control current

Diodes conduct primarily in one direction and are used for rectification, detection, protection, and regulation. Transistors use a smaller control signal to switch or control a larger current.

3. Tubes and batteries still matter in radio

Power amplifiers may use vacuum tubes because they can handle high RF voltage and power. Batteries are electrochemical sources whose voltage, internal resistance, capacity, and chemistry determine behavior under load.

G6A checklist

  • Know the basic jobs of resistors, capacitors, and inductors.
  • Recognize diodes as rectifying/switching/protection devices.
  • Recognize transistors as switching or amplifying devices.
  • Know why component ratings matter.
  • Understand batteries as sources with chemistry, capacity, and internal resistance.
