Digital Circuits, Amplifiers & Oscillators

Digital circuits make logic decisions, amplifiers increase signal level, and oscillators generate repeating signals. Those three jobs appear throughout modern radios.

Practical takeaway

Digital circuits make logic decisions, amplifiers increase signal level, and oscillators generate repeating signals. Those three jobs appear throughout modern radios.

General exam focus

The explanation below teaches the ideas behind G7B while keeping the important terms recognizable. The Quiz Me button uses the current question-pool wording for this group.

1. Logic gates implement Boolean decisions

AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, and XOR gates produce outputs based on combinations of input states. Truth tables are compact descriptions of those relationships.

2. Amplifier class trades linearity and efficiency

Linear RF stages are used when the signal envelope must be preserved. Switching or highly nonlinear classes can be more efficient but are suited to signals or architectures that tolerate that behavior.

3. Oscillators need gain and the right feedback

An oscillator feeds part of its output back in phase so the loop sustains itself at a frequency selected by a resonant or timing network. Stability depends on the frequency-determining components and operating conditions.

G7B checklist

  • Read basic logic-gate truth relationships.
  • Amplifier class trades linearity against efficiency.
  • Linear modes need a linear amplification path.
  • An oscillator requires gain and correctly phased feedback at the desired frequency.
