Transceiver Blocks, Filters & DSP

A transceiver is a chain of blocks that select, convert, amplify, and process signals. Following the signal path is more useful than memorizing one radio model.

General exam focus

The explanation below teaches the ideas behind G7C while keeping the important terms recognizable. The Quiz Me button uses the current question-pool wording for this group.

1. Mixers translate frequency

A mixer combines signals and produces sum and difference frequencies. Receivers use this to move a desired RF signal to an intermediate frequency or baseband where filtering and gain are easier to control.

2. Filters decide what spectrum continues

Low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and band-stop filters pass wanted frequency ranges and reject others. Bandwidth and shape affect both selectivity and how much of the wanted signal is preserved.

3. DSP performs radio functions numerically

After analog-to-digital conversion, DSP can implement filters, demodulators, noise reduction, equalization, and other functions. Sampling rate and dynamic range still impose physical limits.

G7C checklist

  • Mixers create sum and difference frequencies.
  • IF stages make filtering and gain practical at a chosen intermediate frequency.
  • Know the purpose of low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and band-stop filters.
  • DSP can implement receiver/transmitter functions after sampling.
